The European Automobile Manufacturers Association has issued a statement stating that the reduction of steel import quotas by the European Commission will push up prices of related products, thereby exacerbating inflation.
The association stated that even if specific industries such as automobiles are highly dependent on EU steel supply, car manufacturers still need to import a certain quantity and quality of steel products, and the European Commission needs to evaluate the specific situation of these industries. In addition, the European Commission should recognize the complexity of applying new rules of origin in the highly globalized automotive industry.

In a proposal released on the 7th, the European Commission stated that in order to protect the EU steel industry, it plans to significantly reduce the duty-free import quota for steel and impose a 50% tariff on imported steel outside the quota. At the same time, measures will be taken to increase traceability of the origin of steel.
